Did you cut your first reel a long time ago? was the song hilariously bad? Lets hear it.
Mine was this ridiculous hifana song:
I could have sworn it was going to be something from Kevin Macleod (Incompetech), but the earliest reel I can find online is from 2009 and has a snappy Manu Chao number.
The Raconteurs - Steady as she goes
Wolf Like Me by TV on The Radio. In fact, I use it for every reel to this day. I love that song.
Woah... What a list guys!
I really wanted something rock and roll for my very first reel (back in 2010) because... I probably thought music needed to help the visuals... :)
So here it is: https://vimeo.com/16022584
Abra Cadaver by the Hive!
yeah its a bit of a double standard since people flip out when musicians use art without permission. ??♂️
Mine was "Happy Rock" from Bensound, which wasn't the worst possible choice, but it's used in so many YouTube videos that those first two notes make me automatically cringe now.
H.S.K.T. by Sylvan Esso, a Durham, NC band - https://open.spotify.com/track/4ooHsDX0LIPHoWrzs0paYX?si=AkGKD_HuS1i1o_1ngoD9og
Yessir that is a good one.
Ty Segal - Girlfriend
2010 Reel: Razorlight – Rip It Up https://youtu.be/Us5qZcRyOTE
"Astrolabios" by Maga, spanish indie pop. With my reel rocking at 4:3 SD ;>
I don't remember if it were the first-FIRST-FIRST one
but I used this James Pants song years ago.
Theme From Paris
Love this, anything Edan, and really Mr. Lif for that matter.
Cornelius "Mic Check"
Still 100% stand by mine: https://teramelos.bandcamp.com/track/frozen-zoo-nick-reinharts-thawed-out-mix
But i was thinking something by Jamie XX
Are there no usage issues for songs? I have yet to make my first reel
"Pendulum" by Broadcast, from HaHa Sound (2003). 10/10, would use again, unlike any of my work from that (2006/7?) reel... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Jz1bZKCxHs
Actually I'd probably use "Distortion" from the same album today. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IAlQKvmyo8k
Moral of the story: Broadcast was a really really really good band. So good, in fact, that they made my sub-par animation work watchable enough to get some freelance jobs.
Supermassive Black Hole - Muse
Still holds up.
"Lost Kitten" by Metric...
And I think I might go back to it for the next reel cut since it's so damn catchy.
(I also just found out there's a kind of neat video for this song while looking it up on YouTube!)
I recently cut a reel together (first ever) and used this gem
Huge fan of Aesop and all his instrumentals could work really nicely for reels.
Beneath the Piano by Devil Makes Three.
Definitely punchy, but these days I prefer my Lullatone tracks.
My roommates were all fed up hearing interrupted parts of Django Django's Firewater over and over again:
(I'm not though- still looove it! :D )
Put my first reel together when I was 19 and cut it to Moth's Wings by Passion Pit. That was one god-awful reel.
My first showreel that I used to get a job was cut to Meischeid by Chilly Gonzalez: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HpMAG2dXFng
I must've thought it would be so cool and different, but I think it just made people want to have a nap.
For mine it was, Ratatat — Wildcat
(Never made it public — thinking on that, I've never had a public showreel. Something I need to do by the end of the year. Probably.)
Will cut the next to low-fi hip hop and make my millions on YouTube.
Mr Lif - Get Wise 91’ (feat. Edan)
"Jungle Drum" by Emiliana Torrini
Mamma Said Knock You Out - LL Cool J in like 2004. Got me my staff gig at Comedy Central ;) Been toying with the idea of cutting a new reel to it.
haha this will be fun
Mine was "Blue Blood" by Foals
Reached for some good ol' stoner/psych rock by way of Sweden. "Karma" by Asteroid:
Oh man! Los Angeles by X
Ha! Great topic...my first reel was to Chicken Payback by The Bees:
T'was a different time...
I also had a reel once that was every song of The Stranger by Billy Joel. That was probably my favorite...
I came across this super awesome song after watching jrcanest's reel:
Devotchka - All the Sand in all the Sea
kinda cool c:
