As the year comes to a close, I've been looking at what kind of entertainment is on the horizon for 2017. You can guess what's coming from the title of this post-- from Twin Peaks, to Guardians of the Galaxy, to Beauty and the Beast, Transformers, Alien, even Blade Runner-- remixing an old property seems to be the new norm. On one hand I think that it's a trend meant only as a cash grab, taking money and opportunities away from artists who may have new ideas to share. On the other hand it gives creators a chance to return to their stories and tie up unanswered questions, and not every sequel is inherently bad.
Do you believe that there's a lack of originality in our media landscape lately? Obviously I'm focusing on mainstream movies and TV, but as designers, animators, and storytellers, I'm interested in what you think! How can we continue to push the envelope in the new year? Personally, I'm making a resolution to donate to an independent project for every major sequel or remake I see.
