Hello everyone! I wanted to create a post asking for feedback on my reel because I am a student who is soon applying to internships and would always love feedback from anyone in the industry. Especially since this is the last reel of my teenage years since I am soon turning 20. Link: https://vimeo.com/309311744
I also wanted to use this as an opportunity to create a discussion as to how important a Demo Reel actually is. I have heard from some people that companies who are hiring interns or full-time designers/animators will only look at the applicant's reel to determine whether or not they are worthy of hiring. I've even heard that if the employer isn't intrigued after the first 5-10 seconds of a reel, they may immediately click off and not consider the applicant any longer.
But on the other side, I have also heard of companies that won't look at the reel at all and they go straight into looking at the applicant's projects as opposed to the reel because the reel is not really the best indicator of someone who is good at concepting projects. And of course I'm sure that some companies will look at both projects and the reel.
I was just curious as to how true these statements are. To any employers out there in the industry, what do you look at first? What is most important thing an applicant can have? Is a reel truly necessary anymore if the applicant's website is in top shape with plenty of work to show?
