I'm pretty new to the freelance world and have mostly been hired by individuals, not companies. However, I recently got (what I thought would be) an exciting chance to work with an international production company that acted as a middleman between me (the animator) and a music label. A bit more convoluted of a process than what I was used to, but I seized the opportunity nevertheless.
Anyway, the project has since ended semi-disastrously — there was significant miscommunication on the label's vision, and they were doling out unconstructive criticism without giving me any specifics for revision. The production company was clearly on the side of the label, asking for the moon when I just don't have the time or ability. So I resigned.
In terms of payment, I was told (when I signed the initial contract) that I would be paid up front $1k, and $1k after the project was completed. Needless to say, I don't expect to be paid the second half, but I have yet to receive a deposit for the first half. The production company would have had to wire the money internationally, and I understand that this would be less immediate than Venmo. But it's been about two weeks, and I still haven't received anything.
So, do I have a leg to stand on? Should I email the production company about payment? (I resigned only yesterday so I'm wondering if it's still too early. But I really need the money for like, rent and food.) Or should I come to terms with never getting paid for this project because I never delivered?
Also, any general advice about what I may or may not have done wrong in this process would be appreciated. Or commiserating stories. Or just talking shit about production companies (are they all this bad???).
