So for the last year I have been very tempted to delete my facebook. I thought it was bad for my relationships, my mental health generally to be involved with it even well before the revelations of this last summer as far as their complacency and involvement in disinformation in the 2016 election and the way they handle ads and privacy of users
This was a peak where many people, fed up started to leave the platform.
Even though I hated facebook, removed it from my devices, never look at it... I did not delete it. And I feel that there is still a lot of utility in Instagram specifically for an artist, photographer, illustrator etc to gain a following or find work; even though I will admit I am terrible at this particular game also.
I saw this headline this morning, that Zuck wants to further integrate what'sApp, Messenger and Instagram and I don't know the specifics but I don't like this news at all. I don't want to be involved in these companies, in the Facebook ecosystem, but they are in everything. It's hard to avoid. And if you are making visual media, Instagram is a very powerful platform for sharing and engaging in the world.
So what do you do? Can an artist abandon facebook all together? Is it possible in 2019 the be trying to build a name as a visual artist with just a website? Emails? A blog? A message board? Twitter? Or what?
Maybe I can print a zine and hand it out on the corner instead.
